Different Types of Enclosures of Motor
Enclosures of Motors I.S 325-1961
- Protected Motor(P)
- Screen Protected Motor (SP)
- Drip-Proof Motor (DP)
- Splash proof Motor(SPLP)
- Totally Enclosed Motor(TE)
- Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled Motor (TEFC)
- Totally Enclosed Separately Air-cooled Motor(TESAC)
- Flame-Proof Enclosure
Protected Motor(P) Enclosures
A "Protected Motor (P) Enclosure" is like a special covering for a motor that keeps it safe from things like dust and a little bit of water.
A Motor in which the internal rotating parts and live parts and live parts are protected mechanically from accidental or careless contact, while ventilation is not materially obstructed.
Advantages Of Protected Motor(P) Enclosures
- The main advantage is that it provides protection to the motor against dust, dirt, and limited water exposure.
- By keeping contaminants out, a P enclosure helps maintain the motor's performance and reliability.
- Preventing damage from dust and water can save money on repairs and replacements.
- P enclosures are designed to meet industry standards for protection.
Screen Protected Motor (SP)
A Protected motor in which all the ventilators open in the frame and end Shields are protected with a wire screen, Expanded metal or another type of perforated cover, having openings between 0.6 sq. cm and 3.25sq.cm.
Advantages Of Screen Protected(SP) Enclosures
- The screens stop dirt and other things from getting inside and causing problems for the motor.
- Even with the screens, it lets enough air through to keep the motor from getting too hot.
- If the screens get dirty, they can be cleaned.
- These covers are made to be tough and last a long time.
Drip-Proof Motor (DP)
A "Drip-Proof Motor (DP)" is a type of motor designed to prevent water from dripping into critical parts of the motor. The "DP" designation indicates that the motor is built with features to protect against water droplets and light splashes.
Advantages Of Drip-Proof(DP) Enclosures
- DP motors can withstand light splashes.
- DP motors are designed to allow sufficient airflow for cooling purposes.
- DP motors are used in indoor environments.
Splash proof Motor(SPLP)
A "Splash-Proof Motor (SPLP)" is a type of motor designed so that rainwater falling at an angle equal to or smaller than 100 degrees concerning the verticle shall have no harmful effect.
Advantages Of Splash-proof Enclosures
- The motor housing is designed to repel water splashes.
- SPLP motors are designed to maintain adequate airflow for cooling purposes.
- SPLP motors can handle light moisture.
Totally Enclosed Motor(TE)
A "Totally Enclosed Motor (TE)" is a type of motor that is completely sealed to prevent any dust, dirt, or moisture.
Advantages Of Totally Enclosed(TE) Enclosures
- The motor is housed in a sealed enclosure with no openings.
- The sealed housing also provides protection against moisture.
- The complete enclosure enhances the motor's durability and lifespan.
Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled Motor (TEFC)
A Totally Enclosed Motor with augmented cooling using a fan driven by the motor itself blowing external air covers the motor body.
Advantages Of TEFC Enclosures
- TEFC enclosures provide complete protection against dust, dirt, moisture, and other contaminants.
- TEFC enclosures are equipped with a fan that circulates air inside the enclosure.
- The fan-cooling system in TEFC enclosures operates quietly, ensuring minimal noise.
- The efficient cooling provided by TEFC enclosures helps maintain optimal motor performance.
Totally Enclosed Separately Air-cooled Motor(TESAC)
A totally enclosed motor is cooled by a supply of fresh air through pipes. It is used where cooling is not locally available due to the nature of the location of the motor.
Advantages Of TESAC Enclosures
- TESAC enclosures provide full protection against dust, dirt, and moisture.
- TESAC enclosures are designed with built-in cooling systems
- The self-air-cooling feature of TESAC enclosures allows for a more compact design.
- TESAC enclosures require less maintenance, resulting in cost savings and increased reliability.
- The self-air-cooling system of TESAC enclosures is energy-efficient.
Flame-Proof Enclosure
Enclosures for electrical machinery or apparatus that will withstand when the covers or other access doors are properly secured, an internal explosion of the flammable gas or vapours which may enter or originate inside the enclosure without communicating it out, through any joint or structural opening.
Advantages Of Flame-proof Enclosures
- Flame-proof enclosures are designed to contain any internal explosion
- These enclosures are suitable for use in hazardous environments.
- Flame-proof enclosures meet safety standards and certifications, such as ATEX, IECEx, or NEC.
Conclusion
The Indian Standard IS 325-1961 pertains to the specifications for three-phase induction motors. Enclosures are classified based on their ability to prevent the ingress of foreign objects, their cooling method, and their protection against water entry.
